Castello di Lanciano, Castle and national heritage site in Castelraimondo, Italy

Castello di Lanciano is a stone fortress standing on the left bank of the Potenza River, known for its Renaissance architecture with rich decorative details throughout. The building combines defensive features from its earliest form with later refinements added during subsequent periods of reconstruction.

Giovanni Varano built the fortress in 1381 as a defensive stronghold for the region. In the late 15th century, Giulio Cesare Varano made major changes that transformed it into a more elegant residence.

The castle houses the Maria Sofia Giustiniani Bandini museum, which displays paintings and furnishings that show how people lived in the Renaissance and beyond. Walking through the rooms, you get a sense of the tastes and wealth of the families who owned it.

The castle is located in Castelraimondo and can be reached by car or public transportation at Localita Lanciano 3. It is wise to contact ahead or check online for current opening hours and what to expect for your visit.

Isabella d'Este visited the castle in 1494 during her travels and left written praise for its beauty and design. This shows the place was already recognized as something special among important visitors of that era.
