Castello di Montorio

Castello di Montorio is a castle standing on elevated ground in the Stridolone river valley in Tuscany. The building displays stone walls and architectural features from different construction periods, showing signs of repeated rebuilding and reinforcement over the centuries.

The fortress began as an Aldobrandeschi stronghold and later passed to the Ottieri family through an imperial grant in the 10th century. These early rulers shaped its military function, which defined the structure for a long time afterward.

The castle shows how daily life shifted between defense and farming across the centuries. Its layout reflects a time when such places served both as strongholds and centers of work for those living there.

The castle today is a private agricultural estate with limited public access. Visitors can see the fortified walls and elevated position from outside, which helps understand the original defensive placement.
