Castello dei Gonzaga, Medieval castle in Ostiano, Italy

Castello dei Gonzaga is a castle in Ostiano with an L-shaped layout and two surviving towers positioned on a rise in the terrain. The structure features quadrilateral walls that were developed over time, and its location was shaped by the ancient course of the Oglio River.

Francesco I Gonzaga began expanding the complex in the early 15th century, while Ludovico Gonzaga completed the quadrilateral walls about a century later. This gradual development reflects how the family reinforced their control over the region.

The interior held spaces used for theater performances and community gatherings during the 1700s, reflecting how the fortress gradually became a center for town life. These rooms show how medieval military buildings sometimes transformed to serve new purposes for the local population.

The castle sits on an elevated position and is partially accessible year-round under municipal management, though not all sections are open to visitors. The pathways leading to the towers may vary in condition depending on weather and season.

The fortress was originally protected by two distinctive gates - Porta Spinata and Porta della Valle - equipped with drawbridges that connected to the town's outer defenses. These entrance structures reveal how strategically significant the location was for the region's control.
