Sant'Andrea dei Vascellari, Baroque church in Trastevere, Rome, Italy.
Sant'Andrea dei Vascellari is a Baroque church located at the corner of Via dei Vascellari and Via dei Salumi, featuring a Renaissance portal in its central facade. The building has been deconsecrated since 2015 and now functions as a contemporary art gallery presenting rotating exhibitions.
The church was consecrated in 821 under Pope Paschal I and anchored the identity of the neighborhood for centuries. Major renovations in 1666 gave it its current Baroque appearance.
The building once served as a gathering place for potters and artisans of the neighborhood until 1801, when their guild dissolved. This connection to local craftsmanship remains part of the place's identity.
The interior is accessible during gallery hours, so check ahead for current opening times before visiting. Its location in the lively Trastevere area makes it easy to reach and explore other nearby attractions while you are in the neighborhood.
The interior preserves original church furnishings including a wooden choir with Tuscan columns and a painted stucco altar piece. These elements create an intriguing layer between religious history and contemporary artistic use.
