San Francesco

San Francesco is a Gothic church in Lucignano featuring a two-toned facade of travertine marble and pietra serena stone with a central rose window. The interior is organized by Gothic vaults and columns that guide light and create a clear spatial division.

Franciscan friars established their presence here in 1289, laying the foundation for the site's religious importance in Lucignano. The current structure with its artistic elements developed later as the church was enlarged and enriched over successive centuries.

The interior walls display frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries that show scenes from the life of Saint Francis. These artworks shape the character of the space and tell stories that visitors can discover as they move through the building.

The church remains an active place of worship within the Diocese of Arezzo-Cortona-Sansepolcro and is typically accessible during daylight hours. Visitors should dress respectfully and be aware that the space may be less accessible during times of worship or religious services.

A notable fresco called 'Triumph of Death' shows death as a horseman on a black horse confronting two noblemen near the main altar. This dramatic image comes from a period when such paintings served as reminders to viewers about life's impermanence.
