San Nicolao

San Nicolao is a church within the medieval fortifications of Monsummano and features a single nave with wooden roof structures. The semicircular apse remains hidden from outside view as the sacristy obscures it.

The church was established in the 11th century and belonged to the diocese of Lucca during that period. It appears in written records from 1260 that listed all churches within the diocese.

The church appears as a place of medieval devotion with its simple interior layout. A wooden crucifix from the 14th to 15th century shows the skill of local religious craftspeople from that era.

The building sits within castle walls, so visiting depends on the castle's opening times. It helps to allow time for exploring the entire castle grounds since several places of interest are nearby.

The bell tower stands on the right side of the building and was originally part of the castle's defense system. This dual purpose shows how religious and military functions were intertwined in medieval fortifications.
