Castello di Porrona

Castello di Porrona is a medieval fortress with a multi-story main structure and a crenellated tower positioned at the western edge of the settlement. The fortress shares its central space with the San Donato church and is now surrounded by modern residential buildings that have been built against its original walls.

The fortress was built in the early 13th century by Sienese rulers and later became a residence for noble families such as the Tolomei and Piccolomini. These aristocratic households shaped the settlement's character across several generations.

The San Donato church sits at the center of the fortress layout, showing how religious spaces were woven into medieval fortified settlements. Today visitors can see how the chapel and defensive structures formed a unified community hub.

The site offers lodging in restored stone cottages and features a restaurant called Il Fienile housed in a converted barn serving local cuisine. Visitors should prepare for uneven pathways and stairs as the location sits on hilly ground.

The fortress walls merge seamlessly with the modern homes built around them, keeping the medieval structure woven into the village's everyday life. From this vantage point the view extends across the Maremma landscape, a rolling countryside dotted with olive groves and grain fields.
