San Colombano Castle, Medieval castle in San Colombano al Lambro, Italy
San Colombano Castle is a medieval fortress set on a hill above the town of San Colombano al Lambro, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. It features thick stone walls and defensive towers that rise above the flat plain below.
The castle was built in the Middle Ages as a military outpost to control this strategically placed hill on the edge of the Po Plain. The Visconti family, one of the most powerful dynasties in medieval northern Italy, later took it over and used it as a seat of power.
The castle takes its name from Saint Colombanus, an Irish monk who passed through this part of northern Italy in the 6th century. Today, visitors come here on guided tours that bring the stories of the local noble families to life.
The castle sits on a hill and can only be reached on foot via stairs and uneven terrain, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. It is about 19 miles (30 km) from Milan, making it easy to visit by car.
The hill on which the castle stands is part of the only DOC wine production zone within the Metropolitan City of Milan. This means a visit to the castle can naturally lead to a walk through working vineyards just a short distance away.
