San Giorgio

The Church of San Giorgio sits within the fortified walls of Montemerano, featuring Renaissance architecture and a collection of religious artworks from the 16th century.

The church structure connects to the defensive walls built between 1200 and 1300, forming part of the three distinct sections that create the town's heart-shaped perimeter.

The interior of San Giorgio holds numerous Sienese art pieces, including a significant polyptych created by the master painter Sano di Pietro.

Visitors can access the church through the main entrance near Porta San Giorgio, where one of the original defensive bastions remains intact.

An unusual opening in one of the church paintings, known as the cat flap, was created by a local priest to allow his feline companion entry into the building.
