San Giorgio

San Giorgio is a church standing within the fortified walls of Montemerano, featuring Renaissance elements and a collection of religious artworks spanning several centuries. The building is closely tied to the defensive structures that shape this medieval settlement.

The structure is connected to the defensive walls built between 1200 and 1300, forming part of the medieval core of the village. These fortifications shaped the settlement's identity over the centuries.

The interior holds artworks from the Sienese tradition, including a significant polyptych by the master painter Sano di Pietro. These pieces reflect the artistic ties between this small community and the broader art centers of the region.

The church is accessible through the main entrance near Porta San Giorgio, where one of the original defensive bastions remains standing. A visit on foot is straightforward since all pathways through this small village are short.

An unusual opening in one of the paintings was created by a priest who wanted to give his cat access to the building. This odd modification reveals the everyday story behind the artworks.
