Delizia di Belriguardo

Delizia di Belriguardo is a Renaissance villa spread across its grounds with multiple buildings, gardens, and water features surrounding decorated halls covered in frescoes. Leading artists of the period created these paintings to showcase the splendor the Este family desired.

Niccolò III d'Este commissioned this first summer residence outside Ferrara's walls between 1435 and 1437. The villa became a symbol of the family's power and refined tastes.

Inside, a civic museum displays three separate collections spanning archaeological discoveries, Renaissance artworks, and contemporary regional pieces. These sections reflect the tastes and interests of different eras in the area.

The site is easy to explore on foot as different areas are arranged along pathways that lead through gardens and past water features. Plan enough time to view the frescoes in the various halls since multiple rooms contain artworks.

The archaeological collection houses the world's only complete Indian onyx vessel of its kind and a rare amber ring depicting ancient heroes and the goddess Nike. These precious objects reveal the connections and trade relationships the Este family maintained.
