San Giovanni Battista

San Giovanni Battista is a church in Loano with an unusual ten-sided shape and a large dome that rises prominently over the city. The building is designed in Renaissance style and is crowned by a bronze statue of the Saint at its top, visible from the waterfront.

The Doria family had the church built in 1633 on the site of an older 15th-century place of worship. This new construction replaced what came before and became an important landmark for the city.

The church is named after Saint John the Baptist and serves as a spiritual anchor for the local community. Its interior displays grand religious paintings from the 1600s that reflect how art has always been central to worship here.

The church is open daily for visitors to explore the interior and artwork. It is best to visit outside of service times if you want to examine the architecture and decorations without interruption.

The bell tower incorporates materials from an earlier parish church and preserves a Gothic tower section with six tuned bells. These bells create a distinctive sound that rings out across the city.
