Forte della Madonna degli Angeli

Forte della Madonna degli Angeli is a military fort situated on a hill behind central Savona at approximately 232 meters above sea level. The structure features two distinct operational levels with former stables and ammunition storage below, and gun positions for heavy cannons above.

The fort was built in 1881 by the Savoy family as part of a coastal defense system for Savona and Vado Ligure. German troops later converted it into an anti-aircraft position during World War II.

The courtyard displays a memorial plaque and bullet marks on the walls, bearing witness to executions of resistance fighters during World War II. These visible traces tell the story of the fort's role in that period.

The fort is located on a steep hillside with a challenging climb to the entrance, so visitors should be prepared for demanding paths. Good footwear and reasonable fitness are helpful for exploring the site comfortably.

Flak 88 cannons and quadruple anti-aircraft systems were stationed here during the war, making it a major air defense position. This heavy equipment defined the fort's role in the final years of the conflict.
