Foce dei Tre Confini, Mountain pass at Ligurian Apennines, Italy.
This mountain pass sits at 1,408 meters in the Ligurian Apennines and connects Val di Vara with the Gotra valley in northern Italy. The landscape features steep slopes and open grassland that invite exploration of the surrounding ridges and valleys.
Until 1797, the pass marked the border between the Republic of Genoa, Grand Duchy of Tuscany, and Duchy of Parma. Boundary stones from 1780 still mark this triple division that vanished with Italian unification.
The pass forms part of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, a long-distance hiking trail stretching from Ventimiglia to Bolano through the mountains.
Several marked trails of varying difficulty lead to and through the area with clear directional signs to neighboring valleys. Wear sturdy footwear and bring layers, as weather at this elevation can change quickly.
Three original boundary stones from 1780 stand here marking the exact spot where three territories met. These rare markers offer a tangible link to the complex political boundaries that shaped pre-unification Italy.
