Fortezza Orsini, Medieval fortress and archaeological museum in Sorano, Italy.

Fortezza Orsini is a hilltop fortress in Sorano featuring two connected defensive towers with multiple levels of military architecture. Inside, an archaeological museum displays regional artifacts spanning different periods of history.

The Aldobrandeschi family built the fortress in the 13th century to secure their control over the region. In the 16th century, it was fundamentally redesigned with new bastions and defensive systems to counter threats from rival powers.

The twin towers reflect different building periods, combining medieval stone work with later Renaissance additions. Inside, the rooms tell stories of the noble family that governed from this stronghold.

Visitors can explore underground passages, ancient ventilation shafts, and firing points across multiple levels to understand how the fortification worked. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as pathways are steep and sometimes narrow.

Remnants of 16th-century frescoes depicting mythological scenes are still visible in some interior spaces, revealing how the rulers decorated their quarters. These wall paintings offer a rare glimpse into the refined taste of the noble family who lived here.
