Fortezza della Verrucola

The Verrucola Fortress contains multiple defensive walls, watchtowers, a central courtyard, and a chapel on a hilltop position in eastern Lunigiana.

The fortress origins date to the early twelfth century, serving as a strategic fortification on trans-Apennine routes before falling under Visconti control in 1399.

The structure includes an armory room with an octagonal central column and vaulted ceiling, reflecting medieval military architecture of the Tuscany region.

Located near Fivizzano in the province of Massa and Carrara, the fortress maintains two access doors through its fifteenth-century outer walls.

Sculptor Pietro Cascella acquired the fortress in 1977, transforming this medieval military structure into a private residence while preserving its historical elements.
