Rome–Giardinetti railway, Street-running narrow-gauge tram-train line in Rome, Italy.
The Rome–Giardinetti railway is a narrow-gauge tram-train line covering about 5.4 miles (8.7 kilometers) that connects Laziali station near Termini with the Giardinetti district, operating with 950-millimeter (3 feet 1.4 inches) tracks and 1,650-volt overhead electric lines managed by ATAC.
The railway officially opened in 1916 as part of the longer Rome–Fiuggi railway network, initially serving to connect Rome with surrounding towns, though the line was shortened in 2008 when sections became part of the underground Metro Line C system.
Locally known as the Trenino di Roma or Rome's small train, the railway represents a historical transit method that blends early 20th-century engineering with modern urban transportation, maintaining its role in Rome's cultural identity and daily commutes.
The line operates with multiple stations along its route and provides a practical transit option for residents in eastern Rome, connecting suburban neighborhoods to the city center and integrating with the broader ATAC public transportation network.
The railway features street-level running where trains share roads with vehicles, offering passengers views of everyday urban life and allowing the trains to navigate through busy areas alongside regular traffic in central Rome.
