Lago dell'Accesa, Natural lake in Massa Marittima, Italy.
Lago dell'Accesa is a freshwater lake near Massa Marittima in Tuscany, fed by underground springs that keep it full throughout the year. The lake sits within a wooded setting and has wooden platforms along its banks where visitors can swim or rest.
The area around the lake was settled during the Iron Age, and excavations have uncovered remains of an Etruscan village along the shore dating back roughly 2,800 years. The surrounding hills were also mined for metals over many centuries, shaping the landscape and the communities around it.
The shores of the lake were home to an Etruscan settlement, and the name Accesa is thought to come from the Latin word for 'lit' or 'burning', possibly linked to ancient mining fires in the area. Today, local families use the wooden docks and grassy banks as a place to gather during summer.
The lake is open for swimming and the wooden docks make it easy to get in and out of the water. A visit between June and September works well since the weather is warm and the lake gets the most use during those months.
The lake sits above a geological fault, and the underground springs that feed it pass through mineral-rich rock before reaching the surface. This gives the water a chemical composition that differs from most freshwater lakes and supports plant species not commonly found elsewhere in the region.
