Loreto Island, Private island in Lake Iseo, Italy
Loreto Island is a private island in Lake Iseo that features a neo-Gothic castle topped with two lighthouse turrets, situated on rocky terrain rising directly from the water. The island is small and notable mainly for its distinctive architecture and isolated location in the middle of the lake.
In the fifteenth century, the Sisters of Santa Chiara from Brescia established a convent on the island. This religious presence shaped the island for many years before other uses took over later.
The castle was built in 1910 by Vincenzo Richieri and shows how wealthy Italian families of that era chose to live and construct their homes.
Visitors must travel by boat from Monte Isola since the island is only accessible by water. Visits are typically limited to special events and jazz concerts held throughout the year.
Archaeological findings suggest the island served as a stopping point for fishermen and traders in ancient times. This early role gives the site a past that reaches back much further than its modern castle.
