Istituto Marchiondi Spagliardi, Educational institute in Baggio district, Milan, Italy.
Istituto Marchiondi Spagliardi is a school building in Milan with distinctive architecture featuring exposed reinforced concrete and asymmetrically shaped structural elements. The complex includes bands of windows framed in metal running across the facade, student duplex accommodations, and stairs connected to separate sanitary facilities.
The building was designed by architect Vittoriano Viganò in 1957 and replaced an earlier facility whose original location on Via Quadronno was destroyed during World War II. The move to the current Via Noale site in 1952 marked a new beginning for the institution.
The institute was designed as a school of life for troubled youth, and this educational philosophy shaped its open and welcoming layout. Visitors can sense how the building itself was meant to be part of the learning process.
The site is best explored by first observing the exterior to understand the layout and facade details. Plan time to walk through the different parts of the complex and notice how the indoor and outdoor spaces connect to each other.
The building was home to an innovative educational experiment where the spatial design itself served as a teaching tool. Today it is being transformed into student housing for 170 residents, giving the structure a completely new purpose as a living space.
