Monte Summano, Mountain summit in Santorso, Veneto, Italy.
Monte Summano is a mountain in the Veneto region, rising to 1,296 meters (about 4,250 feet), positioned between several valleys including the Astico Valley. Its ridge connects with neighboring peaks and gives a broad view toward the Po Valley to the south.
The site was used as a place of worship in ancient times, as shown by coins and votive objects found there dating back to around 600 BC. Finds continued through the 4th century AD, suggesting the mountain held religious meaning for local communities over a long span of time.
A sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna del Summano sits near the top, at around 1,188 meters, and draws pilgrims from across the region throughout the year. The path leading up to it is part of a living tradition that local communities have kept alive for generations.
Several hiking trails connect the mountain to nearby towns, with options for different levels of experience, so it is worth checking which starting point suits you best before setting out. Solid footwear is recommended, and an early start is advisable in summer to avoid the midday heat.
Four gun emplacements from World War I are still visible at the top, showing how the mountain was used as a defensive position during the conflict. A concrete cross standing 16 meters (about 52 feet) tall marks the summit and can be seen from the valleys far below.
