Palazzo Bolongaro

Palazzo Bolongaro is a neoclassical palace overlooking the Lake Maggiore waterfront, distinguished by varied architectural details. Its interior features grand granite staircases, decorative mosaic floors, and painted ceilings depicting mythological scenes.

A wealthy tobacco merchant named Giacomo Filippo Bolongaro built this palace in 1780 and established it as a major residence. The building subsequently changed hands and was later transformed into an academic center.

The palace served as a gathering place for European nobility in the 19th century and later hosted academic conferences. Its evolution from private residence to public institution reflects changing uses across different periods.

The palace and its gardens occupy a large area, so you should plan to spend adequate time exploring the grounds. Comfortable shoes are recommended since there are many stairs and pathways to navigate.

The estate was once home to a princess from Saxony, which gave the place special aristocratic prestige. This royal connection shaped its reputation as a gathering place for European high society in the 1800s.
