Santo Stefano, Romanesque parish church in Filattiera, Italy
Santo Stefano is a Romanesque parish church in Filattiera with a simple western-oriented facade and a single portal entrance. The structure is completed by a semicircular apse facing east.
The church is first documented in 817 as Ecclesie S. Stefani in loco Campo Maiore. This early record marks its long connection to the Filattiera community.
The interior displays a geometric mosaic floor made from colored marble and holds an ancient Roman sarcophagus from the 2nd century. These pieces show how the building incorporates materials from earlier periods into its sacred space.
The church sits at Piazza Don Renzo Gori in central Filattiera and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Massa Carrara-Pontremoli. It is easily reached on foot in the town center.
During restoration work in 1999, workers discovered the Warrior of Sorano statue embedded within the church facade. This find reveals how ancient sculptures were incorporated into the structure of the medieval building.
