Porto Flavia, Mining port museum in Iglesias, Italy
The port facility extends 600 meters through a mountain tunnel, emerging from limestone cliffs above the Mediterranean Sea at Masua, Sardinia.
Engineer Cesare Vecelli constructed this mineral loading facility in 1924 to transfer zinc and lead from local mines directly onto cargo ships.
The mining complex included housing, schools, and medical facilities for 700 workers who formed communities around the industrial operations.
The museum offers guided tours through both levels of the tunnel system, allowing visitors to examine the original mechanical equipment and loading mechanisms.
The facility features two parallel tunnels with storage silos that could hold 10,000 tons of minerals before loading them onto ships via mechanical arms.
