Riserva naturale I Giganti della Sila, State nature reserve in Province of Cosenza, Italy.
Riserva naturale I Giganti della Sila is a state nature reserve in the Province of Cosenza located within Sila National Park, where ancient larch pines grow in a forested mountain landscape. The protected area spans several square kilometers and houses about 58 of these giant trees, with some reaching heights of approximately 45 meters (150 feet).
The area experienced severe deforestation from the late 1800s into the 20th century, first during the Kingdom of Italy period and later after World War II to supply timber to British and American allies. The establishment of the nature reserve marked the beginning of efforts to protect and restore the remaining ancient trees.
The name Sila comes from an Oscan word meaning forest, a term the Romans also applied to this heavily wooded mountain region. Today, visitors can see how these ancient trees define the character of the place and dominate the landscape with their age and stature.
Walking trails are clearly marked and guide visitors through the reserve, with access conditions varying by season throughout the year. It is helpful to check ahead before visiting, as certain periods may require advance reservations or have different visiting arrangements.
Each of the roughly 58 ancient trees in the reserve carries an information sign displaying its individual number and key details. This labeling allows visitors to recognize the differences among the giant trees and understand their individual character during a walk.
