Riserva Statale Valle delle Ferriere, State nature reserve in Province of Salerno, Italy.
Riserva Statale Valle delle Ferriere is a state nature reserve in the Lattari Mountains east of Amalfi, featuring deep ravines, waterfalls, and fast-moving streams. The terrain is covered with dense woodland and offers a varied landscape of rock, water, and vegetation.
The area received official protection in 1972, partly to preserve the remains of old iron processing sites scattered through the valley. Before papermaking took over, the valley was known for its forges, which worked iron brought from Elba Island.
The valley was a center of papermaking for centuries, and traces of that craft are still visible along the paths. A museum in Amalfi dedicated to handmade paper keeps this local tradition alive for visitors today.
The reserve is best reached on foot via marked trails starting from Amalfi or Scala, and sturdy shoes are strongly recommended as the paths are steep and uneven in places. Setting out early in the day helps avoid the busiest hours along the more popular trail sections.
The ravine shelters Woodwardia radicans, a tree fern dating back to the Cenozoic era that is rarely found in Europe outside of a handful of humid, shaded gorges. The constant moisture from the streams and the shelter of the rock walls create exactly the conditions this ancient plant needs to survive.
