Rifugio Franco Tonolini, Mountain hut in Sonico, Italy
Rifugio Franco Tonolini is a stone mountain shelter located near Lago Rotondo, a glacial lake on the southern slopes of Corno Baitone at approximately 2467 meters elevation. The structure accommodates 56 beds during the summer season and maintains a separate 10-bed shelter accessible year-round.
The shelter was built in 1891 with donations and support from Club Alpino Italiano. It suffered a fire in 1944 but was reconstructed in 1949 and continues to operate today.
The shelter bears the name of Captain Franco Tonolini, an Italian soldier honored for his bravery during World War I. Today it serves as a gathering place where climbers and hikers meet to share their mountain experiences and knowledge.
Visitors should prepare for mountainous terrain and changing weather conditions at this altitude. The location is best accessed during warmer months when trails are open and conditions are more stable.
Eight small alpine lakes surround the refuge, making it a singular location for mountain explorers. As the oldest mountain shelter in the Adamello massif, it offers visitors a window into more than a century of alpine heritage.
