Rifugio Val di Fumo, Mountain shelter in Valdaone, Italy
Rifugio Val di Fumo is a mountain shelter at 1,918 meters elevation in the Chiese River valley, situated among meadows and rocky peaks of the Adamello range. It provides ten multi-bed rooms along with dining and refreshment facilities for mountain travelers.
The Society of Alpine Climbers of Trentino established this refuge in 1884 as a base for mountaineers exploring the Adamello peaks. This founded marked the beginning of organized mountain access in the region during the early alpine club movement.
The shelter serves as a gathering point for hikers and climbers traveling through the Adamello peaks, where visitors experience local food traditions of the Trentino region. These meals reflect the mountain community's way of cooking and living at high altitude.
The shelter opens from May through the second Sunday in October, with advance booking strongly recommended during busy months. Most visitors arrive on foot via established hiking trails that can take several hours to reach from the valley below.
The valley takes its name from frequent cloud formations that create smoke-like effects, shifting rapidly between misty and clear conditions. Visitors often witness these dramatic transformations within a single day of hiking through the area.
