Temple of Jupiter Anxur, Roman sanctuary in Terracina, Italy.
Temple of Jupiter Anxur is a Roman sanctuary on Monte Sant'Angelo above the town of Terracina, spread across several levels and showing remains of defensive constructions. Large stone platforms frame open areas, while column fragments and wall ruins hint at the scale of the original complex.
Rome took over this hilltop after conquering the Volscian settlement of Anxur in the late fifth century before the common era and founded a colony there. Within a few generations, the sanctuary dedicated to Jupiter rose, cementing military control over the region.
The sanctuary takes its name from Jupiter Anxur, a youthful form of the chief Roman deity who received special worship in this region. Pilgrims dropped their questions into a cavity and awaited divine answers through the oracle, a practice that shaped the religious life of the site.
Access follows a steep path, so sturdy footwear helps when walking over uneven ground and loose stones. On hot days, early morning or late afternoon is more comfortable, since the site offers little shade.
Near Monte Leano, a triple enclosure marks the sacred boundary according to old Roman custom, a sign visitors can still spot today. This marker separated consecrated ground from ordinary land and was meant to secure divine protection.
