Limarò Canyon, Natural canyon in Valle del Sarca, Italy
Limarò Canyon is a gorge in the Sarca Valley carved through limestone with towering vertical walls in shades of red and grey. The river has shaped the rock over time, creating a narrow passage between steep cliffs that narrow and widen along its course.
The valley served as a passage route in ancient times, with old stone structures marking early crossings through the terrain. Modern hiking paths developed gradually, transforming the canyon from an isolated gorge into a visited destination.
Local mountaineers Vittorio Giovannella and Francesco Salvaterra established multiple climbing routes throughout the canyon, including the technical path called Calypso.
The canyon can be reached via walking paths that start from nearby parking areas and lead to viewing points along the gorge. Most trails are well marked and suitable for average hikers, though some sections involve climbing up and down slopes.
The canyon walls contain specific climbing routes rated at 6b difficulty level, with variations at 6a/A0, attracting experienced climbers from various regions.
