Archaeological Park of Santa Maria a Monte

The Archaeological Park of Santa Maria a Monte is a site with remains from different periods, including ancient walls, a bell tower foundation, and a medieval crypt. The structures show how people lived and built at this location across many centuries.

This site originated as an Etruscan settlement in the 5th century BC and later became a Christian center with the construction of the Sant'Ippolito church in the 4th century. This transition reflects how the region changed its population and faith over time.

The Antiquarium museum, set in a former convent, displays finds ranging from prehistoric times to the 16th century, including Greek coins and marble sculptures. The collection reveals the succession of cultures that shaped this location over many centuries.

Plan your visit for morning hours on Tuesday and Wednesday or early evening Thursday through Sunday. Groups larger than ten people should book ahead, and be prepared for uneven terrain.

An Etruscan marble monument approximately 70 centimeters wide, discovered near the site, indicates the presence of an ancient necropolis in the surrounding area. This find expands understanding of how large and important the original Etruscan community was here.
