Castle Schlandersberg

Castle Schlandersberg is a stone structure that rises on a ridge 1100 meters above the valley entrance to Schlandrauntal in South Tyrol. The building includes a residential tower with window nooks, a northwestern chapel set in a round turret, and various rooms that have been adapted into apartments since the 1990s.

The castle was built in the 13th century by the Montalban lords as a residential stronghold. The male line of the Schlandersberg family ended in 1755, marking a turning point in the building's long history.

The residential tower displays decorative details such as swallowtail merlons and stone windows with built-in side seats that reflect the lifestyle of its former inhabitants. These features shape the building's appearance today and reveal the craftsmanship of medieval builders.

The castle is reached via a marked trail starting from Schlanders town, passing through wooded slopes and open areas as it climbs. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow enough time for the ascent, as the path includes sections with safety railings where the terrain is steep.

Architects in the 1990s carefully renovated the structure to convert it into modern luxury apartments while respecting its historical character. This transformation demonstrates how centuries-old buildings can serve contemporary needs without losing their authentic identity.
