Castello d'Altaguardia

Castello d'Altaguardia is a castle ruin in Bresimo sitting at approximately 1,280 meters (4,200 feet) elevation with views across the Val di Non valley. The structure consists mainly of partial walls that hint at its original defensive role, and the surrounding alpine landscape dominates how the site feels today.

The fortress began as a watchtower during prehistoric times and served as a strategic outpost for the Livo family. When the Thun family took control, they partially converted it into a residential stronghold.

The castle reflects how communities in this mountain region organized defense and maintained authority over the surrounding valley. Walking through what remains, visitors can sense the connection between the building's position and the land it once controlled.

The site is reachable by following a marked path from Rio Castello, with most visitors needing about 45 minutes for the climb. The terrain is steep and can be slippery, so sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are helpful.

The fortress ranks among the highest situated castles in Trentino and receives few visitors today, giving it a solitary and undisturbed character. This isolation allows visitors to explore the ruin without crowds.
