Corno d'Aquilio, Mountain in Lessinia region, Italy
Corno d'Aquilio is a limestone mountain in the Lessinia region standing at 1545 meters high. The peak marks the northern boundary of Valpolicella and overlooks rolling alpine meadows.
The mountain formed about 30 million years ago when the Venetian Prealps were uplifted. This tectonic movement shaped the limestone landscape visible today.
The mountain serves as a natural border between Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige regions, featuring trails used by local shepherds for centuries.
The hike starts from Contrada Tommasi and passes through highland pastures with about 670 meters of elevation gain. Sturdy footwear and good orientation skills help on the alpine terrain.
The northeastern slope contains Spluga della Preta, a karst sinkhole plunging over 1000 meters deep. This underground opening was first explored in 1925 and remains a site of geological interest.
