Villa Malaspina, Renaissance villa in Fosdinovo, Italy
Description
Villa Malaspina is a Renaissance villa situated at the foot of hills near Sarzana with a three-story structure incorporating fortress-like elements at its base. The property features extensive gardens laid out with geometric flowerbeds bordered by boxwood hedges.
History
The property evolved from a medieval square tower documented in the Pelavicino code of 1231. Gabriele III Malaspina transformed it into a summer residence in 1724, giving it the form we see today.
Culture
The noble floor displays frescoes painted by Antonio Contestabile from Piacenza and Giovan Battista Natali in the early 18th century. These wall paintings reflect the artistic tastes of the family and continue to define the character of the interior rooms today.
Practical
The villa remains privately owned by the Zuccarino family from Carrara and can be viewed from the outside. Access to the interior typically requires prior arrangement, as it functions as a private residence.
Did you know?
Following the death of Marchese Carlo Francesco Agostino in 1722, his sons reported supernatural occurrences within the villa. These accounts are preserved in local records and offer a glimpse into how residents once perceived the spaces.
