Isolino Virginia, Archaeological site on a small islet in Biandronno, Italy
Isolino Virginia is a small island in Lake Varese containing layered archaeological deposits with wooden structures built directly over the water. These stacked layers span different time periods and lie partially submerged beneath the surface.
The first human settlement at this location began around 7000 years ago during the Stone Age. People then lived there for several thousand years across multiple periods until communities eventually abandoned the island.
The site speaks to ancient communities who settled along the lake shore and left behind their daily belongings in the water. These submerged objects show how people lived thousands of years ago and what they ate.
The site is accessible only by boat departing from the western shore of the lake under expert guidance. Visitors should wear weather-appropriate clothing and prepare for a short boat journey.
The lake floor preserved organic materials exceptionally well, allowing scientists to study ancient seeds and wood fragments that normally decay. This waterlogged environment made it possible to learn details about life from thousands of years ago that would otherwise be lost.
