Loretello Castle, Medieval castle in Loretello, Italy
Loretello Castle is a medieval fortification on a hilltop in the Marche region, featuring fortified walls and a circular defensive tower. The structure occupies a strategic position with mostly intact walls forming a traditional castle layout that slopes down the hillside.
Monks from Fonte Avellana built the fortified structure during the 11th century. Major expansions took place between the late 14th and early 15th centuries to strengthen the defensive capabilities.
The castle houses two museums: one displaying objects from rural life and crafts, the other showcasing African collections. Inside the courtyard stands the Church of St Giovanni Evangelista with paintings from the 1500s.
Reaching the castle requires crossing a steep bridge to the main entrance. Guided tours offer the best way to explore the defensive structures and interior spaces.
Parts of the castle walls were demolished in 1920 to make room for a new municipal road. These alterations left visible gaps in the original medieval defensive perimeter that visitors can still observe today.
