Sanctuary of the Madonna of Miracles

The Sanctuary of the Madonna of Miracles is a Baroque shrine featuring a single central nave with eight side altars set along the walls. The interior is lined with intricate stuccowork created by Nicolò Curti in 1762, showcasing sculptural reliefs and ornamental details throughout.

The sanctuary was founded in 1547 after a religious image was discovered in an abandoned chapel, prompting the construction of this formal shrine. The building evolved over the following centuries, receiving its detailed Baroque interior embellishments during the 1700s.

The shrine draws visitors who come to pray before the Madonna image, making it a place where personal faith is openly expressed. The interior shows signs of active devotion through votive candles and offerings left by pilgrims.

Access to the shrine involves walking a pebbled pathway that leads up to a grand staircase and the main entrance. Take time to look at both the Renaissance and Baroque portal elements, as they mark different periods of the building's development.

Inside the shrine stands a marble sarcophagus from the 1500s that holds the remains of an important figure from Alcamo's past. This burial monument illustrates how the sanctuary served as a place of honor for the city's significant leaders.
