Tree of Life, Art installation at MIND, Milan, Italy
The Tree of Life is an art installation in the MIND district of Milan, rising from the center of an artificial lake and built from a framework of metal and wood. The structure has branching arms that open upward and a central platform supported by a network of cables and braces.
The installation was created for Expo 2015 and served as the centerpiece of the Italian Pavilion, where it embodied the theme of food and sustainability. After the world exposition ended, the work remained at its original site and became part of the new science and innovation district.
The name refers to a mythical tree symbolizing life and growth, chosen to express Italy's ability to produce food and energy during the world exposition. Today families and students from the nearby science park visit the installation and watch how water and light transform the metal structure.
The artwork stands freely accessible on a public square that can be reached on foot or by bicycle. The performances take place during the day and in the evening, with the evening shows lasting longer and accompanied by lighting effects.
The wooden elements used come from recycled material that was not discarded after Expo but remained integrated into the permanent construction. The water for the performances comes from a historic canal that has supplied irrigation to the region's agriculture since the 19th century.
