San Martino basilica

San Martino basilica, Minor basilica in Alzano Lombardo, Italy

San Martino basilica is a minor basilica in Alzano Lombardo with its entrance at the intersection of Via Fantoni and Via Roma in Piazza Italia. Inside, three naves supported by white marble columns create a spacious interior with a formal architectural composition.

Construction started in 1659 following a merchant's donation, with architect Gerolamo Quadrio overseeing the design and execution. The Pope elevated the church to basilica status in 1922, recognizing its spiritual importance in the Bergamo region.

The basilica honors Saint Martin, a central figure in Christian tradition whose veneration is reflected throughout the building. Visitors can see religious artworks and symbols that express the devotion connected to his legacy.

The basilica is easy to find near Piazza Italia in the town center of Alzano Lombardo. The adjacent museum of religious art is located right next to the building, making it convenient to visit both the church and the collection.

The sacristy completed in 1676 features sculptures, frescoes, and stucco decorations that later became part of a museum display. These crafted details reveal the high quality of the original work and remain visible to visitors today.
