Alpe di Poti, Mountain trail near Arezzo, Italy
Alpe di Poti is a mountain complex rising 974 meters (3,196 ft) that forms a natural divide between two major river basins in the region. The elevation creates a watershed where water flows toward separate river systems on either side.
The mountain served as part of a Byzantine defensive system from the 6th to 7th century to resist Lombard incursions across central Italy. This strategic location helped protect territories during a period of major regional change.
The church of San Severo sits on the southwestern slope with stone structures from two different building periods visible in its walls. Visitors walking past notice how its architectural details show layers of construction from separate eras.
The area can be reached through a scenic road route from SR73 or via the eastern trail through Scopetone pass depending on your preference. Multiple pathways let visitors choose based on their ability and available time.
A section of the trail carries the name of cyclist Marco Pantani and winds through thick coniferous forests starting from San Polo. This named pathway honors an Italian racing champion famous for his mountain climbing abilities.
