Castello Visconteo

Castello Visconteo is a medieval castle in Vogogna with an irregular floor plan dominated by two contrasting towers. The western side features a semicircular tower while the eastern section is marked by a square tower rising above the structure.

Giovanni Visconti commissioned the fortress in 1348 as a military stronghold to protect the Bassa Ossola during regional power conflicts. It played a key role in controlling this valley area during centuries of territorial disputes.

The fortress now hosts exhibitions and events where visitors learn about the region's past and local traditions. It serves as a gathering place for the community to explore and celebrate its heritage.

The fortress is accessible on weekends and public holidays, with guided tours available through advance reservations. Check current opening hours before your visit to ensure the place is open when you plan to go.

The interior contains three floors of living quarters equipped with fireplaces in every hall, combining both comfort and defensive strategy. These features are unusual for medieval fortresses and reveal the high status of its original owner.
