Castello Chiola-Caracciolo

Castello Chiola-Caracciolo is a fortified palace on a hilltop positioned between the Gran Sasso mountains, the Maiella range, and the Adriatic coast. The building displays a neoclassical façade with an arched entrance and operates today as a hospitality venue.

The fortress began as a Lombard garrison around 864 and was later occupied by Normans around 1071. Over time it served as a residence for noble families, including the D'Aquino and Caracciolo clans.

The interior features contemporary artworks by regional artists displayed within medieval rooms that have cross vaults and barrel ceilings. This mix allows visitors to experience modern creativity set against ancient stonework.

The location operates as a hotel with a restaurant in vaulted cellars that serves regional Abruzzese dishes and local wines. Visitors should note that the hilltop position requires climbing, and medieval rooms may feature tight passages.

The historic courtyard features a modern aluminum and glass covering that preserves medieval character while allowing accessible use. This covering lets visitors experience the medieval space while protected from the elements.
