Rocca dei Conti Guidi, Medieval fortress in Modigliana, Italy.
Rocca dei Conti Guidi is a medieval fortress in Modigliana featuring a central circular tower with four vaulted rooms stacked vertically inside it. Defensive walls and smaller towers surround this main structure, completing the fortified layout.
The fortress was built in the 10th century and served first as a residence for Countess Ingelrada II. It later became the main stronghold of the powerful Conti Guidi family.
The fortress shows building methods that were common in the region, constructed with stones from the river. The way it was built reflects traditions typical of the Emilia-Romagna area.
The climb to the fortress follows a steep path from Modigliana's historic center, covering several hundred meters of elevation gain. Signs in the old town help you find the right direction to start.
A major earthquake in 1918 split the central tower vertically and exposed the four stacked vaulted rooms inside. This crack remains visible today and reveals the tower's internal structure.
