Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta

The Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta is a Baroque church with a Greek cross plan divided into three naves and topped by a central dome. The dome rises 27 meters high, and the interior features colorful majolica tile decorations that cover the walls throughout the space.

An earthquake in 1743 severely damaged the original Romanesque structure, prompting architect Giovanni B. Broggia to lead a major rebuilding project. The reconstruction was completed in 1786 and transformed the church into its current Baroque form.

Religious frescoes and paintings by Domenico Antonio Carella cover the interior walls, depicting biblical stories that connected the local community spiritually. These artworks continue to shape the appearance of the church and help visitors understand religious narratives through visual storytelling.

The church stands in the center of the historical district opposite the Ducal Castle and can be reached from Via Chiesa 8. Its central location makes it easy to combine a visit with other sights in the old town.

The massive bell tower houses multiple bells, including a large one cast by craftsman Raffaele Saia in the early 20th century. This bell is known for its resonant sound and contributes to the tones that ring out across the town.
