Fondazione Morcelli Pinacoteca Repossi, musée en Italie
The Fondazione Morcelli Pinacoteca Repossi is an art museum in Chiari housing paintings, prints, sculptures, plaster casts, and manuscripts. The building, gifted to the town in 1776, contains over 70,000 books in its library including works from the 15th and 16th centuries, plus an art collection featuring paintings by local and Lombardian artists alongside sculptures and decorative works.
The library opened in 1822 based on books left by Stefano Antonio Morcelli, a Jesuit scholar who served as bishop of Chiari until 1821. The Repossi art collection was added in 1854 when Pietro Bartolomeo Repossi, a lawyer and collector, donated his paintings and helped establish a drawing school. The foundation was formally created in 1966 to unite both legacies.
The foundation honors two key figures: Stefano Antonio Morcelli, a Jesuit scholar of ancient writings, and Pietro Bartolomeo Repossi, a lawyer and art collector. Today it serves as a place where students and visitors connect with local artistic and scholarly traditions through direct contact with original objects and documents.
The museum is easy to reach on foot and fully accessible for all visitors with no barriers. It is open on specific days and times with free entry, offering a quiet space to view art and learn about the past in a welcoming setting.
The foundation holds over 5,000 prints and drawings, including renowned works like Pollaiulo's Battle of the Nudes and pieces by Mantegna, Dürer, Tiepolo, and Rembrandt. These valuable prints are rotated periodically to protect them while allowing visitors to discover different perspectives on European art history.
