Castello D'Alessandro

Castello D'Alessandro, Medieval castle in Pescolanciano, Italy.

Description

Castello D'Alessandro rises on a rocky spur overlooking the Molise landscape. The complex includes defensive walls, a courtyard, and residential rooms with a private chapel inside.

History

The fortress began as a military structure in the 7th century during the Lombard period. It later became a ducal residence when the D'Alessandro family took control in 1654.

Culture

The chapel inside holds the relics of Saint Alexander of Bergamo, which arrived from Rome with papal approval in 1673. This religious treasure gave the site spiritual importance for those who lived nearby.

Practical

Access to this heritage site requires advance reservations made through the local cultural center. Plan ahead and contact them before scheduling your visit.

Did you know?

A German chaplain saved the castle from destruction during World War II by drawing attention to the relics of Saint Alexander housed inside. This remarkable act of protection during wartime shows how faith sometimes intersected with military decisions.
