Grotta di Sant'Angelo, Sacred cave hermitage near Balsorano, Italy

The natural karstic cave extends about 20 meters deep into the Serra Lunga mountain chain, featuring two stone altars and ancient architectural elements.

The first ecclesiastical document mentioning this monastery as part of the Monte Cassino Abbey dates back to 1273, before its transfer to Sora diocese in 1296.

The cave contains two main altars dedicated to Saint Michael and the Madonna of the Holy Spirit, accessed through stone staircases built into the rock.

The modern building at the cave entrance replaced former small rooms that housed hermits, with reconstruction work completed after 1952.

During World War II, Indian prisoners who escaped from a concentration camp found refuge within the natural chambers of this mountain sanctuary.
