Parco Faunistico di Spormaggiore, Nature reserve and zoo in Spormaggiore, Italy.
Parco Faunistico di Spormaggiore is a wildlife park in Spormaggiore, in the Trentino region of northern Italy, dedicated to native Alpine species such as brown bears, wolves, lynxes, and wildcats. The enclosures are set in a wooded hillside and are designed to reflect the natural habitats of each animal, with trees, rocks, and open ground.
The park was created in the early 1990s by the municipality of Spormaggiore as a way to protect native Alpine species that had become rare in the region. It opened in 1994 and has grown steadily since then, adding new animals and improving the enclosures over the years.
Walking through the park, visitors get a rare chance to see Alpine predators that once roamed freely across the mountains of Trentino. The enclosures are shaped around the natural habits of each animal, so the visit feels more like observing wildlife in the forest than touring a traditional zoo.
The park is easiest to reach by car, as public transport connections to this rural area are limited. The paths run through hilly woodland, so sturdy footwear is a good idea, and mornings tend to be the best time to see the animals moving around.
Two of the brown bears living in the park are females that were transferred from another sanctuary in the region and settled in well. Their enclosure is the largest in the park and is positioned so that visitors can watch the bears on natural ground without disturbing them.
