Ponte della Gerola, Road bridge in Mezzana Bigli, Italy
The Ponte della Gerola is a road bridge spanning the Po River and connecting the Lomellina and Oltrepò pavese regions. The structure consists of eight cast-iron arches supported by substantial concrete pillars, stretching approximately 880 meters in total length.
The bridge was built between 1913 and 1916 by the Officine di Savigliano company and represented an important infrastructure improvement for the Pavia province. It has shaped transportation connections across the river for more than a century.
The bridge's name originates from the frazione Gerola in Casei Gerola municipality, where the Agogna and Scrivia streams merge with the Po River.
The bridge sits along State Road 755 Gerolese and is subject to vehicle weight restrictions. Vehicles exceeding 30 tons are not permitted to cross.
Until recent asphalt renovations, this bridge remained the only crossing over the Po River featuring a distinctive porphyry cube pavement, known as sampietrini.
