Castello di Rocca San Felice

Castello di Rocca San Felice is a medieval fortress perched on a rocky hilltop at roughly 750 meters elevation with a distinctive cylindrical tower. The preserved defensive walls and internal structures reveal how the complex once functioned as a fortified stronghold.

The Lombards built this fortress around 850 to protect the Duchy of Benevento from Byzantine attacks in southern Italy. This construction marked a crucial moment in defending the region against outside threats.

The castle carries the name of Saint Felix and served as a symbol of control over the mountain valleys below. Today, visitors can sense how it stood as a statement of power in the region during medieval times.

The site is quite isolated and requires some physical effort due to the elevation and steep approach paths. Wear comfortable shoes and allow enough time to explore the ruins without rushing.

The four levels of the tower each served different purposes: a water cistern at the base, a kitchen with an oven above it, and living quarters on the upper floors. This arrangement shows how practical life was organized even at this remote elevation.
